The seedlings and grasses were determined blockaders, refusing to leave the circle despite repeated threats of arrest. Activists encouraged police to adopt the plants, which were charged with magical spells for social change and peace.
At first, police -- who had already shut Fourth and Howard Streets -- threatened to leave the lockdown in place all day. Here, a locked-down "rock" relaxes for a moment before arrests began.
Support protesters effectively closed off the main entrance to the Moscone West annex, forcing BIO 2004 delegates to scurry past the protest line on their way inside.
In a startling feat of street magic, Pagan Cluster activists caused a Green Bloc flag to materialize out of the back of an unsuspecting audience member at the Reclaim the Commons actions.
